Modi govt establishes special police units to crush resistance in IIOJK

Jammu: In a move aimed at intensifying the already heavy militarization of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), BJP-led Indian government has established 19 new special police units across eight districts of the Jammu division.

According to Kashmir Media Service, this move is an attempt to further entrench its control over IIOK by silencing those advocating for Kashmiris’ UN-mandated right to self-determination.

These newly formed units will be headed by officers of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and have been formed along the lines of the notorious Special Operations Group (SOG), notorious for their brutalities against the Kashmiris.

Each unit will be stationed in selected areas, including Malhar and Bani in Kathua district, Pouni-Ransoo, Mahore, Chassana, and Gulabgarh in Reasi district, and Baffliaz-Behramgalla, Mandi-Loran, and Gursai in Poonch district. Similar deployments will take place in Latti and Pancheri of Udhampur district, Desa-Kastigarh and Assar in Doda district, Dachhan and Drabshalla in Kishtwar district, Kalakote in Rajouri district, and Ramsoo, Chanderkote-Batote, and Sangaldan-Dharamkund in Ramban district.

In a bid to quickly operationalize these units, the Indian police have also ordered the immediate transfer and posting of 19 DySPs to lead the newly formed forces.

This latest move by India is widely seen as an attempt to further suppress the voices of Kashmiris, who continue to endure a brutal crackdown in their quest for self-determination. The establishment of these special units is a stark reminder of the lengths to which India is willing to go to maintain its illegal occupation, as it seeks to stifle dissent and crush the spirit of resistance in IIOJK, , which is already recognized as the world’s most heavily militarized zone.
