Renowned Kashmir expert and legal luminary AG Noorani dies at 94

Mumbai: Abdul Ghafoor Majeed Noorani, renowned as AG Noorani, has passed away at his Mumbai residence at the age of 94. A distinguished constitutional lawyer, author, and political commentator, Noorani was widely recognized for his profound expertise on the Kashmir dispute.

According to Kashmir Media Service, born on September 16, 1930, Noorani was a towering figure in Indian intellectual and legal circles. His influential works on Kashmir, including The Kashmir Question and Article 370: A Constitutional History of Jammu and Kashmir, have left a lasting impact on legal and political discourse. His scholarship was marked by a profound commitment to justice and rigorous analysis.

Noorani was a frequent visitor to Kashmir, traveling there almost every other year until 2019. His deep affection for the territory was so strong that he once endured imprisonment for his views.

His passing is widely mourned across India and in Kashmir. In Srinagar, senior APHC leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed his condolences, highlighting Noorani’s personal relationship with him and his invaluable advice on political and legal matters. Mirwaiz described Noorani as a sincere and forthright individual who was a staunch advocate for the people of IIOJK. He praised Noorani’s critical understanding of the Kashmir issue and lamented the loss of a great supporter of Kashmir’s aspirations. The Mirwaiz prayed for Noorani’s soul and wished him a place in paradise.

Noorani’s legacy as a steadfast advocate for Kashmir and his intellectual contributions will continue to resonate and inspire future generations.
