Protests erupt across West Bengal over arrest of activist seeking justice for rape victim doctor
Kolkata: Kalatan Dasgupta, a prominent leader of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in West Bengal, was arrested for his involvement in the “Justice for RG Kar” movement, seeking justice for for the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the arrest has sparked widespread outrage, with protests erupting across the state. Police stations in various parts of Kolkata, including Charu Market, Jadavpore, and Behala, were gheraoed, and demonstrations were also held in districts such as Siliguri, Durgapur, and Burdwan.
DYFI State Secretary Meenakshi Mukherjee condemned the arrest, stating that Dasgupta is being framed and that the government is attempting to break the movement. Mukherjee emphasized that the movement has become a people’s movement, with doctors, mothers, and teachers at the forefront.
Kallol Majumdar, secretary of CPI(M) Kolkata district committee, criticized the government’s attempts to suppress the movement, stating that the police are using honey-trapping and conspirational tactics to arrest youth leaders.
The protests highlight the growing tensions between the government and the opposition, with many questioning the motives behind Dasgupta’s arrest. The situation remains volatile, with further protests and legal challenges expected.
