Restrictions tightened in IIOJK ahead of sham elections

Srinagar: Indian occupation authorities have intensified restrictions in the name of security in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on the eve of the first phase of sham assembly elections.

According to Kashmir Media Service, a multi-tier security arrangement has been put in place, according to Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone, V K Birdi. The measures include the deployment of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) and Indian police to secure strong rooms, polling stations, and booths. Surveillance has also been enhanced, with intensified patrolling and checkpoints established across the territory.

The first phase of voting is scheduled for September 18, with 24 seats up for grabs. The elections will be held in three phases, concluding on October 1. The remaining phases will take place on September 25 and October 1, with 26 and 40 seats contested, respectively. The counting of votes is slated for October 8.

Critics argue that these restrictions undermine the democratic process. The disputed elections come five years after India revoked Kashmir’s special status, sparking widespread tensions that remain high in the region.

Local people are not ready to give legitimacy to the polls, viewing them as an attempt to legitimize India’s illegal control over the disputed territory.
