BJP govt extends black law AFSPA in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Indian government has extended the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in disturbed Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh states.

According to Kashmir Media Service, under the black law Indian forces personnel are not answerable to any law or act and the black law allows areas to be declared as “disturbed” for the convenience of Indian forces personnel.

Under the AFSPA, a district is notified as a disturbed area to facilitate free hand in operations to the Indian armed forces. This legislation grants sweeping powers to the armed forces operating in these regions, allowing them to search, arrest, and use lethal force .

In a notification released by the Indian Home Ministry, it was stated that New Delhi, exercising its powers of the Armed Forces Special Power) Act, has declared eight districts and 21 police station areas in five other districts of Nagaland as ‘disturbed areas’ for a period of six months.

In Nagaland where the AFSPA has been reimposed include Dimapur, Niuland, Chumukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, Peren, Kohima, Mokokchung, Longleng, Wokha and Zunheboto districts.

In Arunachal Pradesh, a review of the black law was in Tirap, Changlang, Namsai district and Longding districts. This extension will be in effect for six months from October 1, 2024.
