Bangladesh seeks Sheikh Hasina’s extradition from India
Dhaka: Bangladesh’s interim government has sent a diplomatic note verbale to India requesting the return of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Dhaka.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Sheikh Hasina, 77, has been in exile in India since August 5, following her departure amid student-led protests that overthrew her 16-year regime. The Bangladesh-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several former officials for crimes against humanity and genocide.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain stated that the note verbale to India emphasized Bangladesh’s desire to bring Hasina back for judicial proceedings.
Additionally, Home Advisor Jahangir Alam confirmed that a letter was sent to the foreign ministry to facilitate Hasina’s extradition under an existing extradition treaty between Dhaka and New Delhi.
It is pertinent to note that Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, had previously pledged to seek Hasina’s extradition, citing the need for accountability for the deaths and injuries during the protests against her government. Yunus also urged Hasina to refrain from making political statements during her time in India.
