IIOJK transformed into military garrison as India deploys 400 CAPF companies in north Kashmir alone

Srinagar: In a stark reminder of the deteriorating situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, New Delhi has deployed an unprecedented 400 companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) in North Kashmir alone, ahead of the third and final phase of sham Assembly elections.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) North Kashmir Range, Maqsood-ul-Zaman, revealed the massive deployment, stating that the forces are in addition to the Army and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel already stationed in the territory.

The third and final phase of the Assembly elections in occupied Jammu and Kashmir is set to take place today, October 1, amidst unprecedented restrictions in the name that have transformed the territory into a virtual military garrison.

The Indian government has deployed additional troops along highways and vital road links. Multiple checkpoints have been established along the Srinagar-Jammu highway, with intensified frisking on all small and major roads and highways.

Critics argue that such extreme measures undermine the democratic process, turning the elections into a military exercise rather than a genuine expression of the people’s will. The territory has witnessed a surge in suspensions and terminations of government employees, with 23 employees suspended recently. Additionally, five more employees were suspended in the run-up to the elections.

The elections, scheduled for today, will see 415 candidates vie for 40 constituencies across 7 districts. However, the legitimacy of the process remains questionable, given the UN-designated disputed status of territory as well Indian government’s iron-fisted control over occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
