Muslim trader killed, mosque and shops vandalized by Hindutva mob in Tripura
Agartala, October 09 (KMS): A Muslim trader was killed, and a mosque along with several shops were looted, vandalized and torched by a Hindutva mob in the BJP-ruled state of Tripura.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred in the Kadamtala area and involved extremists linked to BJP, RSS, VHP, and Bajrang Dal.
The violence erupted after a Muslim family, on their way to a hospital, resisted being pressured for donations to the Hindu Durga Puja festival. Eyewitness accounts, including those from local journalist Prsenjit Debnath, indicate that tensions escalated during this confrontation.
A video showcasing the aftermath of the vandalized mosque, including burned religious texts, has gone viral on social media, provoking public outrage.
In response to the unrest, police resorted to firing and lathi charge to regain control of the situation. Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhanupada Chakraborty reported that eleven individuals have been arrested, and over 700 personnel from various forces, including the Tripura Police, Border Security Force (BSF), Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Assam Rifles, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), have been deployed to the affected areas.
Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman voiced serious concerns, questioning how the community can trust law enforcement when shops owned by minority community members were looted in their presence.
