Hindutva gangs force cancellation of interfaith couple’s wedding reception
Aligarh: An interfaith couple’s wedding reception was cancelled in Aligarh after Hindutva groups threatened violence, citing it as a case of “love jihad” .
According to Kashmir Media Service, the couple, Ashar Choudhury and Avani Bhargava, who had tied the knot in the US four months ago, had planned a grand celebration in Aligarh on December 21 to honour their union, but were forced to cancel the event due to threats from Hindutva groups.
The couple, who hail from different religious backgrounds, were married four months ago in the United States under the Special Marriage Act. However, their wedding reception in Aligarh was opposed by Hindutva gangs, including Bajrang Dal, Karni Sena, and Brahman Maha Sabha.
The groups submitted a memorandum to district officials, warning of consequences if the reception was allowed to proceed. Thakur Gyanendra Singh Chauhan, state president of the All-India Karni Sena, claimed the event was a case of “love jihad.”
Under pressure, both families announced the event’s cancellation on social media, citing “unforeseen circumstances.” The cancellation underscores the unique challenges faced by interfaith couples, particularly when one male partner is a Muslim, in contemporary Indian society.
Family members expressed disappointment but extended their support to the couple’s decision. “It’s unfortunate, but we respect their choice. Their happiness and safety are our top priorities,” said a close relative.
