‘Respecting the people’s mandate is crucial’: Agha Ruhullah in letter to IIOJK CM Omar Abdullah

Srinagar: Member of Indian parliament and senior National Conference leader Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has addressed a letter to Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, highlighting several pressing issues affecting the territory, including the urgent need for the release of prisoners.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in his letter, Ruhullah Mehdi congratulated Omar Abdullah on assuming office and said, “As you embark on this journey, it is crucial to respect the people’s mandate and to align your government’s actions with the aspirations of the citizens”. He outlined several priorities for the government that could significantly enhance societal welfare. In the letter, he has listed five issues including the release of prisoners, rationalisation of reservation policies, filling of vacancies, electricity tariffs and supply, and the verification process.

Mehdi urged the government to prioritize the release of prisoners held without trial, stressing the importance of justice and due process. “This action would resonate deeply with those who value fairness and due process,” he said.

He called for a review of reservation policies to ensure they support deserving individuals while maintaining meritocracy, fostering an inclusive environment.

Mehdi highlighted the need for swift action in filling government vacancies to create employment opportunities and boost the local economy.

With winter approaching, he emphasized the necessity of addressing high electricity tariffs and ensuring a stable supply, which is crucial for families during harsh conditions in the occupied territory.

Mehdi pointed out that the current verification procedures are overly stringent and often penalize individuals for actions they did not commit, suggesting a reevaluation to ensure justice for all applicants.

He concluded by expressing hope that Omar Abdullah would consider these suggestions in his efforts to meet the people’s expectations.
