Hindutva activist disrupts Azaan in Maharashtra mosque
Nandurbar, Maharashtra: A Hindutva supporter entered a mosque in Prakasha village in Maharashtra, India, during the Islamic call to prayer (azaan), demanding the loudspeaker be turned off.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the muezzin refused, leading to an altercation that was captured on CCTV and widely shared on social media.
The man, clad in saffron attire, confronted the muezzin before being stopped by worshippers who intervened to defuse the situation. The suspect, attending a nearby program, entered the mosque upon hearing the azaan.
Superintendent of Police Shravan Datt stated that authorities are aware of the incident and are prepared to act if a formal complaint is filed.
This episode has drawn widespread criticism, adding to concerns about rising intolerance in India, espeically Maharashtra. Similar tensions around the use of loudspeakers for religious practices have surfaced before.
In 2022, Raj Thackeray, leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, called for strict noise control at mosques and other places of worship, intensifying debates over religious freedoms and community relations.
