Top Indian lawyer Ashok Bhan urges immediate statehood restoration for IIOJK
Delhi: Prominent Indian Supreme Court lawyer Ashok Bhan has urged Indian Prime Minister and Home Minister to honor their public commitments to restore occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
According to Kashmir Media Service, speaking at a webinar organized by the World Peace & Reconciliation Forum, Bhan emphasized the need for swift action following the conclusion of assembly elections.
Bhan cited the Indian government’s pledges in Parliament, election campaigns, and the Supreme Court proceedings in the Article 370 case. Referring to the Constitution Bench’s judgment, he noted that the Court had directed the restoration of IIOJK’s statehood “as soon as possible” .
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s government has also passed a unanimous Cabinet resolution urging the Indian government to restore statehood, terming it a crucial step toward healing, reclaiming constitutional rights, and preserving Kashmir’s identity.
Bhan concluded by urging New Delhi to expedite the restoration of statehood.
