Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP to launch signature campaign for alcohol ban in IIOJK

Srinagar: Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will launch a signature campaign to demand a ban on alcohol in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the campaign will be launched by party leader and Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter, Iltija Mufti on Saturday in Srinagar.

Iltija took to X, stating: “Alcohol & drugs are wrecking lives & families in [IIOJK]. We must come together to put an end to it before it’s too late. Join me for a signature campaign tomorrow at the PDP office Srinagar between 11 AM – 2 PM for an alcohol ban to garner support for the PDP bill on banning alcohol consumption”.

The campaign comes at a time when legislators from the ruling National Conference (NC) and PDP have submitted private members’ bills separately in the IIOJK Assembly seeking a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol. The bills will be tabled in the upcoming budget session that begins on March 3.

The IIOJK Congress chapter has also expressed strong support for bills. CPI(M) senior leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, has said that the numbers are not a problem for the liquor bill to become law.

Last week, a controversy erupted after NC chief spokesman Tanvir Sadiq suggested examining the impact of a liquor ban on tourism. Following outrage, Sadiq clarified that his statement had been misinterpreted.
