Kharge jibes at Modi on Trump’s 50% tariffs, calls it a ‘foreign policy disaster’
New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has held Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly responsible for the steep 50% import tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Indian goods, calling it a “foreign policy disaster.”
According to Kashmir Media Service, reacting to the development, Kharge posted on social media platform X, saying, “Trump’s 50 per cent tariffs come at a time when Indian diplomacy is disastrously dithering.”
“You can’t even blame this foreign policy disaster on the 70 years of Congress,” he said, adding that the Prime Minister failed to negotiate a trade deal with the US.
Kharge gave a figure of Rs 3.75 lakh crore as burden on the Indian economy if 50% tariffs were imposed. He expressed worry specifically for smaller industry, agriculture, pharma and textiles, among others.
“Now, Trump is intimidating and coercing us – but you keep quiet,” he said, directly addressing to Modi.
He further called out PM Modi for “keeping mum” on claims made by Trump regarding a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order on August 6 imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, specifically pointing to India’s imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, as an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States.
