More tariffs on India if talks with Russian President fail: US Secretary of State

Washington: US Finance Secretary Scott Besant has warned India that if President Donald Trump’s talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska fail, more economic sanctions and tariffs may be imposed on India.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Scott Besant in a media interview in Washington revealed that US President Donald Trump has already imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on India for continuing to import oil from Russia, after which the total US tariff on India has reached 50 percent and now if President Trump’s talks with President Putin fail, the US tariff on India will be increased further.

This statement by the US Secretary of State has created a stir in India’s trade markets and has raised questions about the Modi government’s economic strategy.

It should be noted that an important and historic meeting between the US and Russian presidents will be held in Alaska, in which the war in Ukraine and economic sanctions imposed on Russia will be discussed.

This will be the first direct meeting between the two leaders since 2021. The US president has announced that he wants Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to join him, provided that both sides agree. If this meeting fails, then one of the biggest victims could be India, which buys large amounts of crude oil and weapons from Russia but also wants to become a strategic ally of the US.
