India under Modi faces diplomatic debacle as lobbyist meets Trump

New Delhi: India under Narendra Modi is facing a fresh diplomatic embarrassment as Jason Miller, a US-based political lobbyist hired by New Delhi for $1.8 million, met US President Donald Trump amid escalating tensions between the two countries over trade and tariffs.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Miller — a long-time Trump campaign adviser — posted photos on social media with Trump, but gave no clarity on the purpose of the meeting. The development comes as Washington has doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent and imposed a punitive 25 percent levy on India’s purchase of Russian crude oil.

New Delhi has termed the measures “unfair and unjustified,” but analysts say the Modi government is scrambling to salvage relations.

Observers note that the lobbying gambit underscores India’s desperation, as Trump has recently described ties with India as “special” even while enforcing harsh trade penalties. Modi attempted to reciprocate with conciliatory statements, but critics argue India’s credibility is eroding.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has taken a more strategic approach by engaging Trump’s close confidant and former Oval Office Director, Keith Schiller, through his firm Javelin Associates, signaling a sharp contrast in diplomatic outreach.
