Jailed Sharjeel Imam seeks interim bail to contest Bihar elections

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University student activist Sharjeel Imam, who is facing trial under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in the Delhi riots conspiracy case, has sought interim bail to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Imam has asked for bail from a Delhi court from October 15 to October 29 to allow him to participate in the electoral process. He intends to contest as an independent candidate from the Bahadurganj constituency in Bihar.

The application was placed before Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai at Karkardooma Courts, where the conspiracy case is being heard. Imam’s plea cited a previous instance where a Patiala House district court had granted interim bail to Engineer Abdul Rashid for campaigning in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir elections.

Imam, a permanent resident of Jehanabad district in Bihar, has been incarcerated since his arrest on August 25, 2020. His appeal against the Delhi High Court’s denial of regular bail is currently pending before the Supreme Court.
