Congress demands ban on RSS, ABVP in educational institutions

New Delhi: The Congress has demanded a ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing Hindutva paramilitary organisation, and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student wing of RSS, in educational institutions, saying they are spreading divisive ideology.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the party also sought strict action against ABVP activists caught filming girl students while they were changing clothes at a government college in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh.

All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) president Varun Choudhary at a press conference in New Delhi criticised the BJP for defending the accused ABVP members.

Lamba said the incident reflected the moral decay encouraged by those in power and vowed not to allow the Madhya Pradesh government to let the accused go unpunished. “They cannot be allowed to play with the dignity and honour of girls,” she said.

Referring to another sexual assault at the South Asian University in Delhi, she sought accountability from Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

Echoing her remarks, NSUI president Varun Choudhary said the RSS and the ABVP were poisoning campuses with communal ideology and called for their ban in all educational institutions. He also demanded the expulsion of ABVP leader Deepika Jha, who recently slapped a Delhi University professor.
