Weaponizing flood situation clear evidence of India’s water aggression: Sherry Rehman
Islamabad: Senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party Senator Sherry Rehman has strongly criticized India and said that weaponizing the flood situation is clear evidence of India’s water aggression.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Sherry Rehman in a statement said that on the one hand, India threatens to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, and on the other, releases flood water to Pakistan.
She said India has exposed millions of Pakistanis to the threat of flood by opening the gates of the Salal Dam. River water should not be a dispute but should be managed responsibly, she added. She said India’s irresponsible policy is dangerous for the peace and trust of the region. She said that India’s failure to provide timely information about water flow has become a challenge.
Sherry Rehman said uncertainty is emerging in the flow of water in the Chenab River. She said India’s actions pose a threat to the irrigation system and the agricultural sector and sudden shortage or excess of water in the Chenab River can affect the canal system.
She said the Chenab River irrigates millions of acres of agricultural land in Punjab and there is a risk that crops will be affected due to changes in the flow of water.
Sherry Rehman said the livelihood of Pakistani farmers is linked to the regulated flow of rivers and India’s uncertain water policy is increasing agricultural risks and water resources should be used responsibly.
She added that India will have to abide by the agreements and it is not allowed to store the water of the western rivers or transfer it to other catchments.
