Congress slams Rajnath Singh’s Babri-Nehru claim as chronologically absurd

New Delhi: The Congress has strongly criticised Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for claiming that Jawaharlal Nehru intended to rebuild the Babri Masjid using public funds and that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had prevented him.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera called the assertion “historically impossible,” noting that the Babri Masjid was built in 1528, while Patel died in 1950 and Nehru lived another 14 years, making the claim chronologically absurd.

Khera accused Singh of peddling politically motivated distortions to suit the BJP’s Hindutva narrative, particularly ahead of the 34th anniversary of the mosque’s demolition on December 6. He also highlighted recent examples of historical erasure, such as the demolition of an 800-year-old temple in Jhandewalan, Delhi, for RSS infrastructure, and condemned the Modi government’s manipulation of facts for political gain.

The Congress leader further attacked the government’s Sanchar Sathi mobile app as an “authoritarian overreach” that threatens privacy, likening it to the Pegasus spyware scandal. Khera questioned the absence of stakeholder consultation and raised concerns over potential misuse of citizens’ data.
