Maharashtra college bans burqa, niqab; Muslim students stage protest

Mumbai: The debate over burqa bans in educational institutions has resurfaced in Maharashtra. Recently, a college in Chembur, Mumbai, prohibited students from entering the campus wearing burqas and niqabs, and a similar move has now been reported in Goregaon.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Vivek Vidyalaya Junior College in Goregaon issued a notification declaring burqas and niqabs strictly prohibited. The notice stated that students are not allowed to wear any attire that signifies their religious identity on campus.

The notification sparked protests by Muslim students outside the institute’s premises, who demanded the immediate withdrawal of the directive.
