Delhi summons Bangladesh envoy over threat to ‘sever’ Seven Sisters from India

New Delhi: Diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh further escalated after New Delhi summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner, Md Riaz Hamidullah, issuing a formal diplomatic protest over threats to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
According to Kashmir Media Service, effigies of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were burned during protests in Dhaka earlier this week, further straining bilateral relations.
The diplomatic row was triggered by remarks of Hasnat Abdullah, leader of Bangladesh’s newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP) and former student movement activist who played a role in toppling the Hasina government. Speaking at a rally, Abdullah warned of the possibility of “severing” India’s northeastern states, commonly known as the “Seven Sisters,” from the rest of India.
The Indian government described Abdullah’s statements and the related threats as “unacceptable” and summoned the envoy to convey its serious concerns, highlighting growing strain between the two neighbouring countries.
