In fresh wave of digital repression, harsh crackdown launched on Kashmiris

Srinagar: In a fresh wave of digital repression, Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK), assisted by Indian paramilitary and police forces, has intensified operations targeting Kashmiris calling for a UN-mandated plebiscite on social media across Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, CIK personnel, along with Indian police, conducted raids and pasted proclamation notices at the residences of several Kashmiris, including prominent businessman Mubeen Ahmad Shah, Aziz-ul-Hassan Ashai, and Rifat Wani in Srinagar and Kupwara districts.
The crackdown, part of a systematic effort by the BJP-led Indian administration and its Lieutenant Governor regime, employs draconian laws to silence voices advocating freedom of expression.
Authorities claim the action relates to alleged social media activity supporting the plebiscite demand, targeting both residents of IIOJK and Kashmiri asylum seekers abroad.
Earlier, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Srinagar had issued proclamation notices against other individuals for similar social media activism. According to officials, the campaign involves coordinated activity across platforms including Facebook, X, and WhatsApp.
Observers say these measures are part of India’s broader strategy to intimidate the Kashmiri people and suppress their legitimate demand for self-determination, a right repeatedly recognized by United Nations resolutions. Rights groups warn that such tactics deepen fear and curtail basic political and civil freedoms in the occupied territory.
