As many as six people, including the driver, were injured in a pre-dawn road accident in Kathua district on Tuesday. The accident occurred when a private vehicle traveling from Jammu to Kathua hit a road divider near Mela Mode, causing extensive damage to the vehicle.

The injured were taken to Hiranagar hospital for treatment, and police have registered a case to investigate the incident.

Dilapidated road conditions are a major contributor to accidents in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Poorly maintained roads, potholes, and lack of proper signage create hazardous driving conditions, especially in hilly areas like Kishtwar, Doda, and Ramban. The Jammu-Srinagar highway, a critical lifeline, is particularly vulnerable to landslides and rockfalls, often leaving commuters stranded. In fact, between 2019 and 2024, over 4,899 lives were lost in road accidents in the region, with many more injured.
