FIRs registered against Ruhullah, Mattu over social media posts about protests

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, police have registered a case against Member of Parliament Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar mayor Junaid Azim Mattu for sharing photographs of protests against the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israel strike and for criticising the Modi regime’s silence over the development on social media.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a statement posted on X, Indian police said, it acted on “credible inputs” regarding the circulation of content aimed at creating fear, disturbing public order and inciting unlawful activities. The police claimed that the material reflected dissemination of distorted narratives and unverified information capable of causing unrest and societal disharmony. However, police have not publicly specified the exact content deemed misleading.
Cases were registered at the Cyber Police Station, Srinagar, the draconian law, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Authorities said investigations have been initiated and further legal action would follow as warranted under law.
Both leaders said that their security cover had been downgraded or withdrawn following their statements on Iran and the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei. Ruhullah said reducing his security or suspending his Facebook account would not deter him from speaking out.
“They think withdrawing or downgrading my security detail will stop me from calling out atrocities,” he said, asserting that he would continue to exercise his constitutional rights. He further declared that he would stand against violations of law, freedom, and democracy.
Former mayor Mattu also said that his security was effectively withdrawn because of his statements criticizing the BJP-led government’s stance on the US-Israel strike on Iran. He termed the action an attempt to silence him and said he would continue to raise his voice on issues of humanity and justice.
