Curfew extended in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills amid tensions

New Delhi: In the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya, curfew has been extended for a second consecutive day in West Garo Hills district amid a prevailing law and order situation, officials said.

According to Kashmir Media Service, District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal announced that restrictions imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita will remain in force from 6 AM on March 15 to 6 AM on March 16, unless withdrawn earlier.

The curfew follows reports of violence and disturbances in different parts of the district, which authorities said posed a threat to life and property.

Officials allowed a relaxation of curfew from 6 AM to 6 PM on March 15 to enable residents to carry out essential activities. Residents have been warned that violations of the curfew or restrictions will attract action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other applicable laws.

Authorities urged people to maintain calm, adhere to restrictions, and cooperate with forces personnel to prevent further escalation of tensions in the district.
