Opposition MPs write to Amit Shah over Hindutva threats to Muslims in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar

New Delhi: Several opposition members of parliament have written to Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, raising alarm over threats by Hindutva groups targeting Muslims in Uttam Nagar in the Indian capital and seeking urgent intervention.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the letter, led by Dr Mohammad Jawed, Member of Parliament from Kishanganj, Bihar, flags what it describes as “open threats, intimidation, and a systematic attempt to create fear” among members of the Muslim community in the area.
The MPs have urged the government to direct the Delhi Police to act swiftly and impartially.
In the letter, the signatories state that the situation in Uttam Nagar is “not an isolated law-and-order issue” but reflects a broader pattern that raises concerns about citizens’ safety and the authorities’ willingness to act decisively.
Uttam Nagar in New Delhi remains tense ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, days after the death of a 26-year-old man in clashes during Holi. Meanwhile, Hindutva groups have been delivering hate speeches against Muslims, warning of bloodshed during Eid.
The MPs also expressed concern over what they termed a “perception of selective or inadequate police response,” warning that inaction could erode public confidence in law enforcement and embolden those attempting to disturb communal harmony.
The opposition leaders have urged the Home Minister to take immediate cognisance of the situation, ensure accountability for any lapses in maintaining law and order, and direct police authorities to act firmly against those issuing threats or spreading hate.
“The silence or delay of the State in such moments sends a dangerous message that intimidation can replace law, and fear can override rights,” the letter states, calling for decisive action to reaffirm the government’s commitment to the security and dignity of all citizens.
The letter has been signed by MPs from multiple Opposition parties, reflecting a broader political push to highlight the issue.
The MPs said they have formally submitted the letter to the Indian Home Minister, urging immediate steps to address the situation and prevent any escalation.
The concerns raised in the letter have also been formally taken to Parliament, with Mohammad Jawed submitting an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha seeking an urgent discussion on the issue.
