Islamophobia at worst: Delhi Rapido driver refuses ride to Muslim passenger

New Delhi: A shocking incident of Islamophobia has come to light in the nation’s capital, as a Rapido driver allegedly refused to pick up a Muslim passenger, citing his religious identity as the reason.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the driver brazenly told the passenger, “Yes, Muslims are not allowed in my vehicle. My car, my choice,” according to audio and video recordings of the exchange.

The incident, which took place on March 21, has sparked widespread outrage and concern over the rising tide of communalism and discrimination in everyday services. The passenger, Zain, a Kerala-based journalist, had booked the ride through the Rapido app, only to be met with blatant bigotry.

Rapido has issued a public apology, stating that the driver’s behavior was “completely unacceptable” and vowing to take action. However, many are questioning whether apologies are enough to address the systemic issue of Islamophobia plating Indian society.

The incident has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many calling for stricter action against those who perpetuate hate and discrimination. As one Twitter user wrote, “This is the face of Islamophobia in India. We need to call it out and reject it in all its forms.”

The incident highlights the urgent need for greater awareness, education, and accountability in tackling communalism and promoting inclusivity in public-facing services.
