Indian forces’ firing kills two protesters, several injured in Manipur
Internet suspended in five districts
Imphal: Indian paramilitary personnel opened fire on protesters in the BJP-ruled, violence-hit state of Manipur, killing two civilians and injuring several others.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel fired after a large number of people blocked a road in protest. The demonstration was triggered by a bomb attack earlier in the day in the Moirang Tronglaobi area, which killed two children and injured their mother.
Following the shooting, protesters stormed a CRPF camp near Gelmol, located a few hundred metres from the blast site. They reportedly set vehicles on fire and vandalised property, police said.
A police official confirmed that two persons were killed in the CRPF firing, while five others sustained bullet injuries. Protesters also torched two oil tankers and a truck, burned tyres in front of the Moirang police station, and damaged a temporary police post.
In response to the escalating violence, the state government suspended internet and mobile data services for three days in five districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur—to maintain law and order.
