BJP govt suspends internet services in Assam after violent protests

Guwahati: The BJP government has suspended mobile internet services across parts of northeastern state of Assam following massive protests that turned violent.

According to Kashmir Media Service, mobile internet and data services have been suspended in several districts, including Chirang and Kokrajhar.

In an official order issued by Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tiwari, the decision was taken in view of reports of unrest in Chirang district.

Indian authorities also detained 25 tribal individuals during an operation in Runikhata.

The situation escalated into violent clashes between protesters and Indian armed forces, with reports of government vehicles being set on fire and attempts made to torch the Range Officer’s office. Indian forces’ personnel reportedly opened fire on protesters, further intensifying tensions in the region.

Meanwhile, severe protests have also erupted in Assam’s tribal districts of Karbi Anglong and Hojai over land disputes, demographic changes, and government policies under the BJP administration. The unrest is largely driven by concerns over encroachment on tribal lands and attempts to alter the demographic balance, sparking widespread anger among local communities.
