India cannot legally deviate from Indus Water Treaty, Raja Khaliq-uz-Zaman Ansari

Hyderabad: India cannot legally deviate from the Indus Waters Treaty as the Indus Waters Treaty is of international nature and cannot be unilaterally violated by any party.

According to Kashmir Media Service, these views were expressed by Spokesperson for the Government of Pakistan (Sindh), Raja Khaliq uz Zaman Ansari in a media interview.

He said although statements have been made by Indian politicians in this regard. However, India cannot legally deviate from the treaty. He said Pakistan’s legal position regarding the Indus Water Treaty is strong and the country is presenting its case effectively at international forums not only at the legal level but also on the foreign policy front.

Raja Khaliq-uz-Zaman Ansari said the World Bank’s mediation role is also included in this treaty, so it is not possible for any single country to take unilateral action. He said that provocative statements by India are just an attempt to exert pressure, however, Pakistan knows how to defend its interests at all levels.

He said Pakistan’s armed forces demonstrated full capability during the recent tension, which gave a clear message to the enemy that Pakistan is not negligent about its own defense.

Ansari appreciated the strategy of Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and said that as a result, Pakistan emerged as a responsible state on the global stage, and the world has been convinced that Pakistan reserves the full right to defend itself.
