Muslim police officer’s name missing from West Bengal voter list amid large-scale roll revision

 

Kolkata : In India’s West Bengal state, under the Election Commission’s Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls, during which hundreds of thousands of names have been removed, the name of a Muslim police officer has also been struck off the voter list.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the officer has served in the police force for the past 37 years. The Muslim Sub-Inspector, Riyaz Karim, a resident of Murshidabad district, is currently posted at Panuri police station and has also been assigned election duty, yet his name is missing from the electoral rolls.

Notably, the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections was held on April 23, while the second and final phase is scheduled for April 29. The Election Commission of India has removed the names of large number of voters as part of the special revision process.

Trinamool Congress chief and Wesh Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with other opposition leaders, have said that the Election Commission is acting under the instructions of the BJP-led central government. They said the exercise is being used to influence the electoral outcome and facilitate the BJP’s political gains in the state.
