Vande Mataram made mandatory in Bihar schools, madrasas; Opposition slams move
Patna : The National Democratic Alliance-led Bihar government has ordered all schools and madrasas to begin the day with Vande Mataram, followed by Jana Gana Mana, evoking criticism from opposition parties.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the directive from the government also mandates the Bihar state song at day’s end, with officials claiming it will “promote respect for the country” and discipline.
Janata Dal-United and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders backed the order, saying the song played a key role in the freedom movement. RJD spokesperson Arzoo Khan questioned the intent: “No one has a problem with patriotism, but the government should focus on education, jobs and health. People are facing real issues.”
Congress leader Dr Snehasish Vardhan said, “Patriotism cannot be forced. People expected improvements in schools, not diktats.” The move has reignited debate over forced nationalism and minority rights, with critics noting madrasas are also covered under the order.
