BJP used delimitation to advance political agenda in IIOJK: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that the delimitation exercise in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) was carried out solely to benefit the BJP and its allies, asserting that the move exposed the saffron party’s political intentions in the territory.

According to Kashmir Media Service, it may be recalled that the BJP-led Indian government carried out a new delimitation exercise in IIOJK prior to the three-phase assembly elections held from September 18 to October 1, 2024.

Omar Abdullah, while speaking to media persons in Srinagar, said the people of IIOJK had suffered because of the delimitation process, which, he maintained, was designed to politically favour the BJP.

“We have suffered because of their delimitation. And we know how the delimitation was done. It was carried out only to benefit the BJP and its allies,” he said.

He said the statements of BJP leaders clearly reflected the party’s intentions towards Jammu and Kashmir. Referring to the Leader of Opposition (LoP), Omar Abdullah said it was evident that he was impatient to assume power in the territory. Notably, Sunil Kumar Sharma is the current LoP in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir assembly.

“It is obvious that the LOP is impatient to occupy the Chief Minister’s chair in Jammu and Kashmir,” he remarked.

Omar Abdullah further said that the BJP was deliberately preventing the smooth functioning of his government and delaying the restoration of statehood for political reasons.

He said the statements made by the opposition leadership indicated that unless the BJP formed the government, the territory would neither be allowed to function properly nor regain its statehood.

“The people of Jammu and Kashmir should remember that the LoP and his party indulge in blackmail politics,” he said, adding that people were being threatened in the name of statehood restoration.
