Specially-abled persons stage protest in Baramulla in favour of demands

Srinagar: Scores of specially-abled persons staged a strong protest at Kriyapa Park in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, demanding effective implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, members of the J&K Ittehad Handicapped Welfare Association raised slogans against official apathy, saying that despite the enactment of the Disability Act nearly a decade ago, many provisions remain only on paper.

Protesters said if a government cannot provide rights to disabled persons under its own 2016 Act by delaying implementation, it has no right to claim to represent people’s aspirations. They added that persons with disabilities continue to face immense hardships due to inadequate implementation of welfare measures envisaged under the Act, leaving thousands struggling for basic rights and dignity.
