Dalit teen brutally beaten for touching water in UP

Kanpur: Upper-caste Hindu men brutally assaulted and humiliated a 16-year-old Dalit boy in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh for touching a bucket at a public handpump.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred in Jhakhra-Sambharpur village under Sachendi Police Station, Kanpur. The teenager, son of a farm labourer, said Sanjay Rajput, his brother Deepak, and associates Sagar Kumar and Patiya Kumar attacked him after he took water from a bucket belonging to upper-caste villagers.

The boy told the media that the men snatched the mug, hurled casteist slurs, and accused him of polluting the water source. “They beat me for nearly half an hour.

They kicked and punched my father too when he tried to rescue me,” he said. He alleged the attackers forced him to lick spit off their shoes and made him drink water poured into his shoes. The assault left him with a fractured arm, while his father suffered a fractured rib. The accused reportedly sprinkled Ganga water to “purify” the handpump afterward.

The UP Congress said “casteist thugs thriving under those in power” carried out the attack, calling it an assault on the Constitution and equality under BJP-RSS rule.
