Muslims in Assam protest against discriminatory law

Guwahati: Hundreds of Muslims staged a peaceful protest in Assam’s Cachar district against the recently enacted Uniform Civil Code, calling it discriminatory and an interference in religious practices.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protest was held in Berenga, with residents gathering outside a local mosque and raising slogans demanding withdrawal of the legislation.
The protesters said the UCC infringes upon religious freedoms and seeks to alter long-standing personal laws of the Muslim community. Many viewed it as an attempt to interfere with matters deeply connected to faith and identity.
Former MLA Ataur Rahman Mazarbhuiya, addressing the gathering, accused the government of introducing a measure that threatens religious liberty and Assam’s diverse social fabric. He said the law disproportionately targets Muslims and questioned the exemption granted to Scheduled Tribes under the Act.
“If some communities are exempted, then how can there be equality?” Mazarbhuiya asked. The protesters urged the government to reconsider the law and engage with affected communities before implementation.
