LoC mine-laying incident raises operational safety concerns

Jammu, June 17 (KMS): Four Indian Army personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer, were injured in an accidental mine explosion during a mine-laying operation in the Kalal area of Nowshera sector, Rajouri district in Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the personnel were placing mines at a forward defensive position when one of the devices detonated. The injured were evacuated to a military medical facility. Indian authorities did not immediately disclose their identities, the type of explosive device involved, or the precise circumstances of the incident.

The explosion has raised questions over mine-handling procedures, technical preparedness and command supervision in forward areas. Mine-laying is a specialised combat-engineering task requiring trained personnel, accurate mapping and strict safety protocols.

Any lapse in recording, marking or securing minefields near civilian settlements, agricultural land and commonly used routes can create long-term risks for local residents, livestock and military patrols.

The incident underscores the need for a transparent inquiry and stricter compliance with established operational and safety procedures. KMS
