India’s dependence on Russia exposes hollowness of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ claim

New Delhi : India’s continued reliance on Russia for strategic defence systems has once again exposed the hollowness of the Modi government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” [self-reliant India] logan, with New Delhi now seeking joint development of S-500-derived technology after being denied direct sales.
According to Kashmir Media Service, reports indicate Russia has refused to offer India the finished S-500 Prometheus system, prioritizing its own forces, and is instead allowing joint development for India’s proposed Project Sudarshan Chakra.
Analysts said that after decades and billions spent on DRDO, India still cannot build a credible upper-tier air defence shield on its own by 2035. They noted that S-400 deliveries are already delayed and indigenous programs like Project Kusha and BMD phases continue to lag.
“This is not partnership — it is continued vassalage dressed up as strategy,” observers said, adding that while Modi talks of a multi-layered defence, the nation remains exposed to hypersonic and ballistic threats. They said India needs ruthless accountability and genuine self-reliance, not more Russian technology-transfer deals that highlight its strategic weakness.
