New Delhi: At least seven people were killed and many others were buried under the rubble after a five-storey student hostel building suddenly collapsed in the Satyaniketan area of the Indian capital, New Delhi.

According to Kashmir Media Service, rescue teams are constantly searching for survivors by removing the rubble of the building, while it is feared that many people are buried under the rubble.

According to India Today, Indian authorities say that the death toll after the accident has risen to seven. So far, 11 people have been pulled out of the rubble, while about 40 to 50 students were there when the building collapsed. However, the final number of people trapped under the rubble is not yet clear.

The severity of the accident can also be gauged from a video call from a student who was trapped under the rubble. In the approximately 11-second video shared by the National Students Union of India, the student can be seen amidst dust and debris. There are also traces of blood on his face and he is seen calling for help through his mobile phone.

The reasons for the collapse of the building were not immediately clear. However, according to the police, repair work was underway on the ground floor of the building.

Locals have said that construction or repair work was also being done in the basement and water had accumulated in the basement due to the rains that have been going on for a few days.
