Uniform Civil Code to threaten religious, cultural identities, warns NC

Srinagar : National Conference (NC) has strongly opposed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s plans to impose the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across 21 Indian states, calling the move a serious threat to the social fabric.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Shammi Oberoi, Treasurer National Conference and Rajya Sabha Member, reiterated the party’s stance against the imposition of UCC, emphasizing that the proposed legislation could interfere with personal laws, religious practices and centuries-old traditions of various communities. He warned that such a move might adversely impact religious and cultural identities.

Addressing media persons at the party headquarters, Shammi Oberoi stated, “India’s strength lies in its pluralistic society, characterized by rich cultural, religious, and linguistic diversity. The constitutional safeguards that protect the traditions and personal laws of different communities must be respected.”He added, “Any attempt to impose a single uniform legal system on all sections of society could undermine the fundamental diversity.” He further highlighted that India’s beauty is rooted in its diversity, which forms the bedrock of its democratic and secular identity.

Instead of forcing communities to conform to a uniform legal framework, he stressed the importance of safeguarding the rights and fundamental freedoms.

The party, he said, cannot support any measures that threaten the legitimate rights and identities of diverse religious and cultural communities.
