Protesting tanker drivers warn of suspending supplies if demands not met
Jammu: Oil tanker drivers and cleaners staged a protest in Jammu region of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir against the deprivation of Kashmiri people of their political rights, including the right to elections, and the delay in conducting union elections.
According to Kashmir Media Service, led by Paramjit Singh, a large number of tanker drivers and cleaners gathered outside the Narwal Oil Depot, in Jammu, voicing their grievances against the authorities.
The protesters said that despite seeking intervention from the court, the union elections were not being conducted in accordance with union norms. While the court directed the Deputy Commissioner of Jammu to initiate the election process, the concerned Tehsildar was accused of delaying tactics and not conducting the elections.
The tanker drivers warned of suspending supplies if their demands were not met within four days.
After staging a protest for over an hour, the drivers resumed their work, but remained firm in their demand for timely and fair union elections.
The protest highlights the growing frustration among the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir over the Indian government’s failure to address their political and economic concerns. The tanker drivers’ threat to suspend supplies could have a significant impact on the territory’s economy, as it relies heavily on oil supplies for transportation and other essential services.
