Protest continues against Ropeway project in Katra
Jammu: Hundreds of people took part in a protest rally against the proposed ropeway project along the Vaishno Devi trek route in the Reasi district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protesters marched through the main market in Katra, chanting slogans against the shrine board’s decision to set up a ropeway along the trek.
The rally, which began at Shalimar Park and concluded at the bus stand, also saw participants demanding the release of individuals arrested in connection with an FIR lodged last month after a clash between anti-ropeway protesters and the Indian police.
The Shri Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, which is leading the agitation against the ropeway project, has called for a complete strike in the town on December 18 in support of their demands.
Last month, shopkeepers, laborers, and pony and palanquin owners working along the trek staged massive protests for four days after the shrine board decided to proceed with the Rs 250 crore passenger ropeway project between Tarakote Marg and Sanji Chhat along the 12 km route, fearing a loss of livelihood.
