Indian SC slams Manipur govt for bias against undertrial Kuki prisoner

New Delhi: The Indian Supreme Court has expressed deep concern and skepticism regarding the BJP-led government of Manipur, raising alarms over the discriminatory treatment of an undertrial prisoner based on his Christian tribal identity.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the case revolves around an undertrial who, despite suffering from severe health issues including extreme back pain, piles, and tuberculosis, was denied medical attention. According to reports, the prisoner, a member of the Christian Kuki community, was not taken for medical examination due to his tribal background, with authorities citing potential law and order issues.

Citing a bail order issued by the Manipur High Court, the Supreme Court today criticized both the state police and government for their handling of the situation, questioning their integrity and commitment to justice.

“We do not trust the state [of Manipur]. The accused was allegedly denied medical treatment because of his Kuki community background? This is deeply concerning,” remarked the SC bench.

The bench directed the Manipur government to immediately transfer the accused to Gauhati Medical College in Assam for a thorough examination, with detailed medical reports to be submitted by July 15. The state was also instructed to bear all medical expenses incurred.

The incident underscores persistent ethnic tensions in Manipur, particularly between the Hindu-dominated Meitei community and the Christian-majority Kuki community. Violent clashes between these groups in May last year resulted in the deaths of at least 225 individuals, predominantly Kukis, and the displacement of 60,000 people from their homes. KMS-19S
