Restrictions tightened across IIOJK on eve of India’s Independence Day today
Srinagar: Indian authorities have imposed strict restrictions across occupied Jammu and Kashmir, on the eve of India’s Independence Day celebrations.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the restrictions are aimed at stifling any protests or demonstrations in favour of Pakistan and against Indian rule.
A multi-tier restriction set has been put in place at Bakshi Stadium, the venue of the main Independence Day function, while regulatory barricades have been established at several places as part of the restriction drill.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, V K Birdi said that the restrictions are in place to ensure that everything remains “peaceful,” implying a clampdown on any dissenting voices.
Authorities are conducting checking of vehicles on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Forces personnel are seen carrying out checks for the safe and smooth conduct of the celebrations.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Udhampur Prehlad Kumar appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity to the police, hinting at a surveillance state.
The restrictions are a stark reminder of the disputed nature of Jammu and Kashmir, which has been under Indian occupation since 1947. The UN has acknowledged the territory’s disputed status, and the international community has called for a resolution to the conflict.
