In a diplomatic blow to India, Bangladesh recalls top envoy

Dhaka: Bangladesh has withdrawn its High Commissioner to India, Mustafizur Rahman, in a significant diplomatic reshuffle.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Rahman is among seven diplomats recalled from various global postings. The move comes after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime ended on August 5, following street protests in Dhaka.

Bangladesh has withdrawn the High Commissioner from India, indicating a foreign policy re-set from the times of former Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina’s regime that ended on August 5 following street protests in Dhaka.

A letter signed by Mohammad Nazmul Haque, Director General (administration) of the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry, did not give details why Rahman was being withdrawn but asked the diplomat to return to Dhaka immediately.

The recall notice, issued by Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry, didn’t provide reasons for Rahman’s withdrawal.

The development comes despite the recent efforts by India to mend fences with Bangladesh, including meetings between Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohd Touhid Hossain.

The diplomatic shift follows the swearing-in of an interim government led by Nobel Peace laureate Mohd Yunus on August 8.
