NC, CPI-M boycott event marking revocation of IIOJK’s special status

Srinagar: The National Conference and the Communist Party of India-Marxist boycotted the so-called Union Territory (UT) Foundation Day event set for today (October 31) in Srinagar.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the event, led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, marks the anniversary of the snatching of occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019.

NC Chief Spokesperson and MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, stated that his party would not partake in the event, calling the 2019 revocation of occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s special status “unconstitutional and immoral.” Sadiq emphasized the party’s commitment to restoring statehood, remarking, “We want that the statehood of [occupied] Jammu and Kashmir be restored as soon as possible so we can enjoy our status as a full-fledged state, like others in India.”

Sadiq further criticized the discontinuation of the historical ‘darbar move’ between Jammu and Kashmir regions, calling it an essential aspect of IIOJK’s heritage which was broken by BJP. He also pledged to address these issues gradually, as per the party’s manifesto.

CPI-M senior leader and MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, echoed these sentiments, calling the celebration an inappropriate endorsement of “assaults on constitutional rights.” Tarigami noted the harsh restrictions imposed on occupied Jammu and Kashmir during the 2019 transition, asserting, “This shows how J&K was treated by New Delhi. The denial of rights should not be celebrated.”
