Modi’s push for Yasin Malik’s death sentence raises legal questions: Article
New Delhi: Prem Shankar Jha, an Indian economist, journalist and writer, in a fresh article highlights the controversial pursuit of a death sentence by Modi government for Muhammad Yasin Malik, the illegally detained chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), languishing in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the article titled “The Controversial Pursuit of a Death Sentence for Yasin Malik” appeared in The Wire critiques Modi government’s political motives in reviving a 34-year-old case, involving an attack on Indian Air Force personnel in 1990, despite a lack of concrete evidence.
Jha points to inconsistencies in witness testimonies, doubts about the credibility of key testimonies, and the political ramifications of executing Muhammad Yasin Malik, which could deepen Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s alienation from India.
The author warns that this pursuit risks further destabilizing the territory and strengthening Pakistan’s narrative on Kashmir.
