Jain community latest target in India; protests met with police brutality

New Delhi: In another alarming incident underscoring the rapidly deteriorating condition of religious minorities in India, tensions erupted in Jabalpur city of Madhya Pradesh after derogatory remarks were made against the Jain community, triggering protests and a police lathi-charge.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred in the Kamaniya Gate area under Kotwali police station limits, where a minor dispute at a well-known sweet shop escalated into a communal flashpoint. Rajkumar Jain, a local businessman, complained that during an argument over the quality of food served, the shop staff hurled objectionable and derogatory remarks against the Jain community, deeply hurting religious sentiments.
The situation worsened when news of the alleged insult spread, prompting hundreds of members of the Jain community to gather outside the shop, raising slogans and demanding immediate action against those responsible. Community members said the protest was peaceful, but police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd, leaving several people injured, including minors.
Police officials later confirmed that an FIR was registered on Jain’s complaint and three persons were detained, while a case was also lodged against the shop owner and two others. Authorities claimed the use of force was necessary to prevent escalation, though Jain leaders strongly condemned what they described as one-sided and excessive police action.
The incident reflects a dangerous and widening pattern of intolerance in India, where Muslims and Christians have long been subjected to mob violence, hate speech and state-backed discrimination, and minority communities like Jains are now also finding themselves vulnerable. Rights activists argue that the growing culture of impunity, coupled with heavy-handed policing, is eroding India’s secular fabric and fostering fear among religious minorities.
