He said the disruption of data-sharing and agreed mechanisms threatens food security, economic stability and the livelihoods of millions dependent on the river system.

Tensions over the treaty escalated after India put it in abeyance following a deadly April 2025 attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which New Delhi blamed on Islamabad. Pakistan has rejected the allegation.

Marking World Water Day, the president also highlighted the theme of water and gender, noting that women and girls bear the greatest burden of water scarcity, particularly in areas where access remains limited.

He stressed that access to clean water and sanitation is a basic right and called for stronger resource management, investment in water infrastructure and greater inclusion of women in decision-making.

President Zardari also urged citizens to adopt conservation practices such as rainwater harvesting, warning that growing population pressures and climate change are intensifying water challenges.
